Books in alphabetical order

This section presents the books published by Joan Aiken, in alphabetical order by UK and USA editions. Foreign editions are listed under the volume that they are translated from, unless they are original works (ie not direct translations). Coverage should be complete for UK editions, and near to complete for USA editions (except the most recent).

Note that the date of publication is taken from the sources named, and that reprints are not listed. Thus the multiple Puffin reprintings of many Joan Aiken books are not shown. Also, the listing makes no attempt to follow the changed cover illustrations of the bulk of the paperbacks - this might perhaps be a project for another time.

For each book, I list (when known)

Title full title, as on book
Illustrator if any
Any other collaborators if approrpiate
Date of publication with month if known, but this is definitely less reliable than the year.
Publisher specified using the notations in Appendix A
Size,pagecount where known
ISBN when known, and when appropriate
Sources as in Appendix B
Notes anything else of interest
Caveats doubts about the data given

British and American books are assumed hardback unless otherwise stated.

Note that the sources do not always agree on what or how much they say, so the list of sources does not necessarily imply that they all confirm the whole entry. In particular, the counting of pages seems to be a local art form of each source.

Where I have been able to confirm them, the page count is given as the page number of the last page of text, which may not actually be numbered itself, and the size is the "vertical" measure of the book, rounded up to the nearest centimetre. Note that this means that octavo corresponds to 21cm. Typical Puffin paperbacks are 18cm (occasionally shading into 19cm), and typical Cape hardbacks are 21cm.

In the list of sources, three notations should be distinguished.

**own** means that I own the first printing of that book (note that the 'book' here is not necessarily the first edition of the title)
--own-- means that I own the specified printing
..seen.. means that I have seen the book (ie had it in my hands)

Note: I am still in the process of working through my sources again to find size, number of pages and ISBN. The size and page information can largely be checked against volumes that I can actually touch, so should be quite correct by the time I finish.
